    Description

HOBBS BROCKUNIER EAPG POLKA DOT OPTIC RUBY CRANBERRY ART GLASS OIL CRUET
A beautiful piece of American made early American pattern glass or if you prefer art glass.
It was made by the Hobbs, Brockunier & Company in Wheeling, West Virginia.
It is made in a cranberry colored glass with a crystal or clear colored glass applied handle.
It is a hand-made blown piece of glass and has a ground and polished pontil mark on the base.
This piece has been part of me personal collection since 1992.
I am uncertain if the stopper is original to the piece.
The stopper is a quality piece of glass and has been cut and polished on all facets.
It also appears to me to be “ground in” and seems to fit the cruet fairly well.
This same cruet is pictured on page 71on the book
Hobbs, Brockunier & Co. Glass: Identification and Value Guide
by Neila & Tom Bredehoft, but does not have a stopper.
These authors say the “polka-dot” pattern was introduced by Hobbs in 1884.
They also say that this is truly not a pattern but rather a polka-dot optic effect in the glass.
Regardless, it is a gorgeous piece!
I do my best to describe all items as accurately as possible and to the best of my ability.
Some of my photos may be somewhat lighter or darker than actual to better show detail or color.
However, do not hesitate to contact me with any questions, comments, or with requests for additional pictures.
I will get back to you as soon as I am able.
I want your transaction with me to be exactly the way I want mine to be when I am the buyer.
    Age and Condition
This piece dates to circa 1890.
The cruet is in very good original condition.
Please look closely at the photos as they are an important part of my description of this item.
In looking over the cruet there are no chips, flea bites or repairs that I can see.
There is some very minor staining to the inside bottom of the cruet, but no cloudiness.
The cruet does have a “heat check” near the handle that also has some black ash involved (see the close-up photo of this).
The piece still rings true when I tap it on the tri-cornered rim and I cannot feel this with my fingernail.
Please read my explanation of the difference between a “heat check” and a crack in the following paragraph.
The stopper has a large chip to the bottom end (see the photos) as well as some other minor roughness to a few of the points on the cut facets.
There are also some signs of wear on the base that I would expect to see on a 120 year old piece of glass.
All of the issues mentioned should be visible in the photos.
Please keep in mind the photos may be blown up at least 8-10 times normal, so anything you see will look 8-10 times larger in the photos than it really is.
To me the difference between a heat check and a crack is: A heat check cannot be felt with your fingernail; it is internal to the glass.
Heat checks are a byproduct of the manufacturing process in glassmaking and came from the factory that way.
They occur when the glass does not cool down as expected in the annealing lehr, are not always easy to spot and therefore many times made it out of the factory that way.
A crack on the other hand is something I associate with damage to the glass after it left the factory.
When a piece is cracked you can feel the crack with your fingernail.
Also, when a piece is cracked, the glass will not ring like a bell when you tap it with metal; you get a bit of a dull sound.
Typically glass with a heat check will still ring like a bell when tapped in this manner.
To my ear this piece still rings fine.
Please note: if you see a dark spot in the photos it is from my camera and is not a mark on the piece.
It will be either just to the right of center towards the bottom or slightly above center on the right side of the photo.
    Approximate Dimensions
About 3.75” (9.5 cm) in diameter and about 6.5” (16.5 cm) tall at the top of the stopper.
    Approximate Weight
    About 11.375 ounces (323 grams).
